Pontefract Collieries FC vs Carlton Town FC

Pontefract Collieries FC vs Carlton Town FC

On a windy afternoon, Pontefract started the most threateningof the two teams by testing Felix Annan early on. Joe Lumsden’s cut back to the edge of the box was sweetly struck by Callum Nicell and the shot was held well by Carlton’snumber one.

Again, the Carlton side was challenged when Nicell’s shot from the right-hand side of the box was parried away to AdamHaw who hit the post from the rebound. The ball was then tapped in by Pontefract’s Lumsden in the six-yard box, but the offside flag was up, and the score remained 0-0.

Pontefract’s constant pressure was eventually rewarded when Carlton misjudged a corner. Lumsden volleyed the ball back to the Carlton goal, which was pushed out to Nicell, who tapped in on 24 minutes to make it 1-0 to the home team.

However, Carlton levelled the scoreline 10 minutes later, when Lamin Manneh curled a beauty from the edge of the 18-yard box, smashing into the keeper’s left hand top corner. This gave Carlton some momentum for the rest of the half which ended 1-1.

Carlton started the second half quickly and should have taken the lead when, Niall Hylton tried to play a one-two with Alex Howes, resulting in Howes’s perfectly timed reverse ball back to Hylton putting the winger one on one with the keeper. However, Hylton could only manage to fire his shot at the keeper’s legs.

Carlton continued to gather pace when substitute Niall Davie, jinxed his way past the Pontefract defenders but could only manage to deliver a shot over the bar from the 18-yard box.

Carlton was rewarded for their brilliant second half. In the dying embers of the game, Pontefract failed to fully clear a Carlton corner and Lawrence Stewart Gorman’s looping cross was dropped by the Pontefract keeper and fell in the path of Niall Davie, who headed in from two yards out. The goal sent Davie and his teammates into raptures, knowing that Carlton was going home with a well-earned three points and a 1-2 result.
