EXCITING NEW SIGNING FOR MILLERS AS FORMER MANSFIELD TOWN YOUNGSTER SIGNS!

Carlton Town are delighted to announce the signing on contract of former Mansfield Town youngster James Matthews who looks likely to be a direst replacement for Ollie Clark who recently joined Basford United.

Matthews impressed not only President Roger Smith during a behind closed door friendly when he starred in a 3-0 victory for the opposition Ollerton Town, but more importantly joint managers Tommy Brookbanks and Mark Harvey and after meeting them this week, the impressive youngster as put pen to paper on a deal with the club.

Matthews who is only 21 played for AFC Mansfield before receiving an offer to play for Gainsborough Trinity last season and had received approaches from other clubs while playing for Ollerton recently.

After the behind closed door friendly, the Millers management duo spoke to their own contacts and received nothing but positive feedback about the youngster with the advice generally being, if you don’t sign him, somebody else will.

Matthews has spoken exclusively to this website and admitted that the last two seasons had been stop, start due to the pandemic and admitted he was keen to come to a club with ambition and faced with a choice, it was Tommy and Mark who won him over.

Stop, start it has been for us all due to Covid 19 and repeated lockdowns, but with the vaccine rollout proving extremely successful, there is a real hope that next season will be a completed one

Matthews told us “I’m really excited to be coming on board, I’m ambitious and looking to challenge for promotion, no messing about, I aim to get straight down to business, I was impressed with Tommy and Mark and their drive and ambition and can’t wait to meet the lads and get stuck into preseason training”

The box to box midfielder also revealed that he thought it was vital midfield players contribute to the club’s goal count and he admitted that hitting double figures was a priority in his first  forthcoming season with the Millers.

Carlton Town Tv will be themselves catching up with James soon and will carry out a more in depth interview, but for now James Matthews, welcome to Carlton Town Fc.
