Lions Claim Three Points At Home To Extend Winning Start

Carlton Town Lions beat Wollaton Hall Stags 7-1 on a difficult pitch to move to first in the league with ten wins from ten.

Following an overnight downpour, the pitch had suffered and both teams had to deal with a slippy and unpredictable surface. It was a frantic start to the game, but the Lions took control of the game with two quick-fire goals after 15 minutes. Ethan Turnbull carried the ball down the right from the half-way line and found Zindan Salih in the box with a pinpoint cross. Zindan coolly slotted the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper to give the Lions the lead. Moments later, the roles were reversed as Zindan won a header in midfield to put Ethan in on goal and he finished with a confident strike into the bottom corner. The team continued to press and scored a third on the 20 minute mark. Wollaton failed to clear an attacking set piece and after a scramble, it fell to Ethan to score his second of the game. Wollaton didn’t let their heads drop and scored a goal with half an hour played. This time it was Carlton’s turn to not clear a set piece and they took full advantage with a close-range finish. The final goal of the first half came just before the break. Sonny Shaw played a beautifully weighted ball over the top of the defence to Ethan, who latched onto it and clipped it over the keeper to complete an excellent hat-trick.

The second half started in similar fashion, with Carlton enjoying the majority of the possession. Finlay Huffadine scored a brilliant goal after good play with Jack Cockram. The two combined well in midfield before Finlay smashed the ball into the far corner from outside the box. Five minutes later, Sonny collected the ball on the edge of the box and hit a swerving shot that left the keeper rooted to the spot to make it 6-1. With 15 minutes remaining, Jack Cockram completed the scoring on the day with an accomplished finish into the bottom corner from a Joel Daft assist. It was a good performance from the team in difficult playing conditions, but the Lions coped well and deserved the result.

Next week the Lions take a step away from the league to play in the quarter final of the Nottinghamshire Sunday League Cup. Carlton have a tough test against Pinxton, which is being played at Carlton Forum’s new 3g pitch. It is set to be a brilliant game and the kick off is at 12.30pm, so please do come down to show your support for the team.
