Impressive Away Win For Carlton Against A Tough Retford Team

Carlton secured a valuable 3 points and clean sheet in a hard-fought and well-deserved 2-0 win at Retford.

Having made the long journey up to their ground on Sunday morning, we were greeted with a very decent pitch, but once again the wind made for difficult conditions. The Lions have had injury concerns over recent weeks and with 12 players available, it was a tough task for the team. The Lions made a good start to the game and had some flowing passages of play, controlling possession well. It was particularly impressive how we managed to feed the ball from the defence into the attacking players, which was a big improvement on recent weeks.

Carlton got a deserved lead when, after a good spell of pressure, the ball fell kindly to Ethan Turnbull in the box to open the scoring. It was no more than the team deserved, but it still took a superb save from Toby Randall to ensure we went into the break with the lead.

Playing into the wind for the second half offered a good challenge, but the resilience of the team was outstanding. The Lions won the vast majority of aerial duels, while also taking up excellent positions to collect the second ball. It was a more mature, considered performance in that respect. Carlton got their second after a fortunate break of the ball meant Ellis Tongue got through one on one. The keeper made a good save to start, before Ellis collected the rebound and finished well.

Dan Butler (left), Jack Dalton (right), along with Jake Putnar, Finn Martin and Toby Randall, played a big part of the team keeping a clean sheet.

It wasn’t easy at the end of the game. A few injuries meant Carlton had to play with 10 men for the final 15 minutes. The Lions kept their composure very impressively and came away with the deserved victory.

It was a day of real positives. A clean sheet is very welcome and the work-rate showed by the team throughout will stand the team in good stead for the remainder of the season.

Thank you to all the parents who made the long journey up to support the team and help get the game on. As always, it’s really appreciated.
Our next game comes as a rearranged fixture this weekend, away to West Bridgford Chilli Peppers.
