Lions Away Win Continues Excellent Form

Carlton Town Lions put in an accomplished performance to beat West Bridgford Chilli Peppers 5-1 away from home.

The Lions made an excellent start to the game and took advantage of decent playing conditions, moving the ball quickly and combining well. After a dubious decision from a corner, which should have seen Joel Daft awarded a goal, he broke the deadlock after 20 minutes. Collecting the ball from a throw-in, Joel drove inside and smashed the ball into the roof of the net from 20 yards. Not long after, he put in a dangerous corner and Finn Martin got across his defender to score from 6 yards out. Carlton put on more pressure before half-time, but the Lions went into the break 2-0 up.

For the start of the second half, the tempo of the passing dropped and it invited West Bridgford into the game. They pounced on a loose pass into midfield and scored a good goal with a fine strike from the edge of the box. Although it was against the run of play, it gave Carlton a wake up call and the quality of the football improved again.

Carlton got their third when, again from a Joel Daft corner, Jack Dalton flicked the ball goal-bound before Finn Martin slid in to claim his second of the game. The pressure increased and after a string of good chances, Aaron Wainaina back-heeled the ball perfectly into Joel Daft’s path and he swept the ball into the far corner. The same two players combined again for the final goal of the game, exchanging quick passes in the box before Joel beat the onrushing keeper to complete his hattrick.

Joel Daft showed his quality throughout, contributing 3 goals and an assist in an excellent performance.

It was a good performance from the team and a deserved victory. There were moments of real quality in the game from Carlton and the team will look to take that form into the coming fixtures.
